A disappointing comedy directed by American silent comedian Langdon that stars Naughton and Gold as a pair of vagabonds who learn that they can purchase their uncle's loan company if they can raise the necessary cash. The duo attempt to win big at the horse races, but there they cross the

path of the vampish Brier and her boy friend, who overhear the plan and decide to buy into the business themselves. Brier winds up being the big winner at the track and she buys the company, leaving Naughton and Gold in the cold. Director Langdon at one time was ranked among silent comedic

geniuses Chaplin, Lloyd, and Keaton, for his sensitive (now some say smarmy) portrayal of a naive, baby-like character who represented the innocent, wide-eyed child in all of us. Unfortunately, his real-life personality was similar to his screen persona, and he became a pathetic case by the time

sound had arrived due to his bratty egotistical ravings and unreasonable demands. Rejecting directors Frank Capra and Harry Edwards, who had guided him successfully in the past, Langdon insisted on directing himself in three films. Each was a disaster. Langdon left the movies and returned to

vaudeville, but failed there as well. He declared bankruptcy and sank out of sight only to make token cameo appearances in forgettable features. When he died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1944 he was nearly penniless. WISE GUYS is an extremely obscure film that was made in a period of Langdon's life

that is not well documented and therefore all the more fascinating.
