This domestic drama was based on the novel by J. Wesley Putnam, and covers terrain that even by 1917 was already very familiar. Elizabeth Ferris (Jean Sothern) marries the wealthy Ralph Dunham (Leo Delaney) to save her family's finances -- Dunham has offered to give her parents a million dollars if they wed, even though Elizabeth has insisted the marriage will be "in name only." Eventually Elizabeth does find what she believes to be true love, with young lawyer Craig Clifton (William O'Neill). When he discovers that his wife loves someone else, Dunham decides to leave home so she can divorce him. Elizabeth has confided in the minister who married her, and he convinces her that the marriage contract should be held sacred. This is just as well, since Clifton turns out to be a cad. Dunham is ready to shoot himself over his broken sham of a marriage, but his wife, chastened by the minister's words, returns to him in more than just name only.
