Subtly handled and lushly photographed samurai epic in which Ichikawa is the fighter assigned the task of accompanying a lady-in-waiting and young prince from the court of a defeated warlord to a place of safety. Their path is filled with enemies who would like to see the prince dead,

but Mifune comes to the rescue and easily mows down numerous adversaries without once deeming it necessary to draw his sword. Also coming to Ichikawa's aid is a witch, Mizuno, who threatens to discontinue her assistance unless Ichikawa gives his affection to her instead of the maiden he is

escorting. Although Mifune has a secondary role, he dominates the film with an incredible display of physical prowess. The whirlwind appearing at the end of the film is a creation of the same man responsible for Japanese movie monsters Godzilla and Rodan.
