America's Sweethearts, the Olsen Twins, continue circling the globe in the kind of escapist, chastely romantic movies that were once the specialty of Sandra Dee. For Charli (Mary-Kate Olsen) and Leila (Ashley Olsen), a summer internship in Rome is a dream come true. While carrying out menial chores for the House of Hanson, the Yankee twins are also competing for upcoming positions as personal assistants to fashion maven Derek Hanson (Julian Stone) in New York. Unfortunately, there are six interns but only two spots open for the following summer, so fledgling photographer Leila and aspiring couturier Charli must compete with Daria (Ilenia Lazzarin), Paolo (Michelangelo Tommaso), Nobu (Archie Kao) and Heidi (Valentina Mattolini). The American eager beavers mess up and the Hanson's office manager, Enrico Tortoni (Matt Patresi), fires them; fortunately, Hanson gives the girls a second chance. Perhaps Hanson's romantic preoccupation with in-house designer Jami (Leslie Danon) has put him in a good mood. While redeeming herself, Charli has a run in with Paolo, who doesn't take his job seriously enough for Charli's tastes. Leila meanwhile falls for Hanson's shy nephew, Ryan (Derek Lee Nixon), who won't even try to fill his famous Uncle's shoes. Although the twins get back in the company's good graces, Hanson faces corporate catastrophe after someone steals the spring line. Tortoni blames the interns, who band together to redeem their reputations. Charlie goes on a design spree, which Charli shoots for the House of Hanson. Then all the interns delve into the world of industrial espionage and root out the real traitor. The show goes on, and so does a summer of sweet amore. The combination of pop music, puppy love and foreign travel Olsen twins fans have come to expect is recycled in this sweet-natured, if predictable, film.
