Ten years after the first version of the Zane Grey tale, RKO again did right by western viewers with Mitchum bringing Richard Dix's Pecos Smith character to the screen in an admirable way. A stagecoach robbery brings him together with Hale, disguised as a boy for reasons of safety, who is

on her way to the family ranch in Texas. She's a gentle, high society girl, but because of the vest and hat, Mitchum doesn't even notice, that is, until he playfully tosses her into the Pecos River. She comes out with her clinging clothes giving away her secret. They continue to make their way to

the ranch where Mitchum has been offered work, battling outlaws along the way. They safely reach their destination and agree to an expected wedding. Mitchum first came to the attention of the critics and the public in this promising picture, which presaged his stardom. He disappeared from films

for a time shortly before the film's release, serving in the Army during WW II.
