Miscast again in his second sound feature release, Gilbert plays a scruffy British merchant sailor who, with shipmates Beery and Tully, loves the liberty and licentiousness of his seafaring life. Smitten by shipping clerk Hyams, who pays him little notice and tends to stay upwind, Gilbert

finally bathes, shaves, and attires himself in a shorebound suit to pursue the courtship. After the wedding, he confesses that he lied to her about his dry-land job and they separate. The disconsolate Gilbert pulls himself together and becomes a ship's officer, complete with natty uniform. The

equally disconsolate Hyams, emigrating from Blighty to Canada, finds herself traveling on the same ship as the neatly accoutered officer. A shipwreck occurs, giving the principals a chance to demonstrate their courage, and love blossoms once again. The film is choppily edited and, with its

multitude of collaborating screenwriters-- allegedly necessitated by the censor's scissors--difficult to follow. The action scenes at sea are excellent and Beery steals all his scenes. Gilbert fails to fit the type as the Liverpool Lothario with fancy ladies Moran and Lloyd in a cheap waterfront

dive. His voice is fine, but the persona is wanting; drawing rooms are more his style. Comic foil Tully, better known as a writer than as an actor, is a none-too-satisfactory sailor sidekick.
