A fundamentally distasteful effort, WAIT FOR ME IN HEAVEN turns the despotic rule of Francisco Franco into a slapstick comedy. Needing a double to fill in for the Generalissmo when he goes on his frequent fishing trips, the secret police kidnap look-alike Soriano, a befuddled middle-aged

prosthetic salesman, and make it appear as if he has been murdered. While his wife grieves, Soriano is taken to the presidential palace where he is schooled in the art of imitating Franco. Although a seemingly a lightweight comedy, this is somehow inherently disagreeable. Whereas Chaplin mocks

Adolf Hitler in the somewhat similar THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940), that work expresses a sense of moral outrage, desperation, and anger that WAIT FOR ME IN HEAVEN lacks. Instead, the attitude toward Franco and his crimes is much like Pepe Soriano's performance--one in which he meets every indignity

and abuse heaped upon him with a mere shrug. The portrayal of Franco himself is puzzling, showing him as a tired, harried, vaguely benevolent monarch who simply would like to be left alone. Even the secret police--who are shown to be the real manipulators behind the throne--are basically likable

individuals just doing their jobs. Perhaps inadvertently, the only moments of true social comment are derived by the film's use of actual locations, such as Franco's palace and yacht, which provides the public with a glimpse of the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the despot.
