Set on a small Italian island, this tale begins with Magnani's return to her home village after being kicked out of Naples for prostitution. She encounters Staiola, the brother she has never seen, and Brooks, the sister she last saw as a baby, now a beautiful young woman. She also meets

with indignation from the rest of the villagers, who go so far as to refuse Magnani entrance into the church. In a touching scene of defiance and faith, she prays on the ground in front of the crowd of judgmental women. Brazzi, a young diver with a disreputable past, entices the young Brooks to

fall in love with him. As the knowing sister wishing to keep Brooks from a troubled future, Magnani drowns Brazzi, an act which leaves her so guilt-ridden she fails to save herself when the active volcano on the island explodes. Director Dieterle brought an entire crew to a small island that had

nothing to offer the visitors in terms of modern conveniences. Under such circumstances Dieterle did a very creditable job, always under the threat of a possible eruption from the active volcano. The sequences with the bubbling volcano, as well as other odd features of life on the island, are the

worthy results of his efforts.
