A very frightening adaptation of the John Wyndham novel about a small English village that becomes the victim of unfriendly aliens. During a 24-hour period all the inhabitants of Midwich are put to sleep, waking to find a dozen of the women pregnant. When these babies are born, their

mothers love them as if they were conceived under normal circumstances. However, all of these children look the same, with bright blond hair. The are also possessed of superior intelligence and telekinetic powers. Sanders, a physicist and the husband of Shelley, who has given birth to the leader

of the children, undertakes the job of educating these youngsters and soon discovers that their mission is not a friendly one: they plan to take control of the entire planet. Sanders then sees that the children are destroyed, killing himself in the process. Sanders' role required more outward

emotion than he had in his repertoire, but this casting mistake is more than compensated for by the weird atmosphere provided by the children. Made in England for less than $300,000, the picture grossed more than $1.5 million in initial release in the US and Canada alone. It spawned a host of

possessed-children-as-villains films, including THE OMEN and THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL. This intriguing story also gave rise to a sequel, CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED, which proved every bit as good as the original.
