VAMPIRE WARS is a stylish, extremely bloody Japanese animated tale of a vampire cult in modern-day Paris mixed up with CIA agents, French intelligence and fugitive terrorists. Horror noir combines with thriller elements and a convoluted storyline for a package sure to satisfy its

intended audience.

In Paris, Kousaburo Kuki, a Japanese terrorist-in-hiding, is framed by French Intelligence chief Charles Lassar for a series of brutal murders and blackmailed into helping him uncover a CIA/NASA project codenamed "Dracula." A cult of vampires had apparently raided a NASA base in Arizona and then

turned up in Paris, where a CIA agent is found murdered. Lassar wants Kuki to monitor CIA station chief Charlie McGovern. At the same hotel where McGovern is staying, film star Lamia Vindaw is attacked by the vampires. She is almost bitten by the head vampire, but he is interrupted by Kuki's

timely arrival. Kuki takes Lamia into hiding, but they soon fall into a trap laid by Lassar and Lamia is abducted by McGovern's men. Kuki interrogates Lassar and learns the location of the CIA hideout before killing him.

After a failed attempt to free Lamia, Kuki finally meets the leader of the vampire cult, who informs him that the vampires are descendants of a race from outer space that came to earth 5000 years ago and is engaged in an ongoing battle with another alien race. Lamia's blood has a rare element that

will help the vampires reconnect to the spiritual force from their home planet that will enable them survive on Earth. The vampires help Kuki board the CIA plane that is carrying Lamia to the U.S. Kuki is mortally wounded by the CIA agents, but Lamia, now a vampire, overpowers her captors and

saves Kuki by biting him and turning him into a vampire. Kuki and Lamia turn the plane around to fly to Transylvania, where Lamia will be able to help the extraterrestrial vampires.

While not easy to summarize, VAMPIRE WARS is nonetheless exciting, fast-paced and full of violent, bloody action, as well as realistic character designs and imaginative nighttime Parisian settings. Its take on vampirism as extraterrestrial in origin is quite a departure from traditional vampire

lore (as seen in such 1998 Hollywood releases as BLADE and JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES); it would have been interesting to see where this series would have gone had there been any sequels to follow this one-shot OAV (original animation video) release from 1989.
