As smarmy and dumb as this film is, if you're willing to suspend your good taste, it's also very amusing. It's distinguished by some witty lines and a few scenes that place it far above the usual undergrad movie and just below the superior REVENGE OF THE NERDS (1984). Three college teams

are set to compete in a raft race. The team worth rooting for is composed of likable maladroits from Lepetomane University--Bob (Tim Matheson), Gonzer (Stephen Furst), Max (Dan Monahan), and Irwin (Sandy Helberg). The two other teams are the bad guys. From the Ivy League comes a foursome of

wealthy blond preppies headed by Rex (Jeff East), and the last competitors are from a tough military school, neo-Nazis led by Braverman (Blaine Novak). What's surprising here is the superb river raft footage that is so real it's hard to tell if it was done with miniatures or not. This movie

doesn't have an ounce--nay, a dram--of subtlety. The situations are clearly marked, and their solutions are easily guessed. But that's not a detriment here as we can take solace in the familiar; all we need wonder about is the path to the obvious conclusion. UP THE CREEK won't win any awards, it

will enrage bluenoses, and it will annoy intellectuals. But the plain truth is, it's funny.
