As much a horror movie as a western, UNINVITED concerns a band of greedy gold-fever prospectors who desecrate an Indian burial site and don't live to tell the tale. Neither genre is well served.

Grady (Jack Elam) leads a band of prospectors to their newly purchased gold mine, and, refusing to walk past an Indian cemetery, wishes them good luck. The prospectors arrive at the mine and find three dead men--and lots of gold--waiting for them. That night the prospectors suffer the first of a

series of ghoulish nightmares: in the mine, the men find a vein of gold, and, as they step on buried Indian skeletons to get it, the mine caves in and one of the men dies.

Charley (Dennis Gibbs) suddenly remembers that US soldiers chased Indians to their site, and that Grady was the only survivor. An Indian then tries to warn the group away. Neither of these stories makes an impact on the prospectors, who, propelled by gold fever, hang the Indian. One prospector,

a minister, decides to leave. He digs a grave for the Indian, then dies and falls in. Eventually the evil climate compels the two women in the group, Emma (Bari Buckner) and Cecilia (Erin Noble), to leave. But Emma's husband bets his wife in a poker game and loses her to the nastiest prospector,

Jackson (Christopher Boyer). When he tries to collect, Cecilia, former prostitute and budding feminist, shoots him in the arm. A night of carnage follows--capped off by an Indian ghost forcing Jackson to hang himself. When morning comes, Emma and Cecilia are the only survivors.

In merging two genres, director Michael Bohusz, who wrote UNINVITED, has a fun idea--but that's where his inspiration ends. The film, filled with either despicable villains or insufferable do-gooders like Emma, is bereft of heroes. And a horror movie without heroes to terrorize, is, of course,

asking for trouble. As for the other horror factor--gruesome deaths--perhaps a low budget made blood capsules too rich an expense. As a result, even the death scenes here aren't up to snuff. (Extensive violence, adult situations.)
