author's work. Dan Butler (John Garfield), a crooked jockey who has been barred from racing in the US and Italy, flees to France with his son, Joe (Orley Lindgren), barely escaping death at the hands of a gangster. In Paris, Dan and his son run into Paule Manet (Micheline Presle, the star of the

French classic DEVIL IN THE FLESH, in her first American role), a beautiful woman who owns her own nightclub on the Left Bank. In an effort to become the perfect dad that his son imagines him to be, Dan decides to run an honest race, and also become serious with Paule. However, pressure from

gangster Louis Bork (Luther Adler), who demands that the rider throw a race in order to pay back a loan, puts Dan in a spot.
