Sheffield (David Neidorf), a Baltimore policeman, is disturbed by the death of his partner, who was killed while trying to infiltrate the high school drug scene in Port Allen, South Carolina. Sheffield heads south and joins the same undercover squad, whose members include La Rue

(Jennifer Jason Leigh) and unit boss Sgt. Irwin Lee (Barry Corbin). After a conventional beginning, UNDER COVER gets interesting as the plot takes some unusual twists. Director John Stockwell works like a magician, misdirecting audience attention while slowly building up a few neat surprises.

Neidorf, like the story, begins as a movie stereotype, but he gradually creates a character of some depth. Leigh, who deserves more screen time than she's given, also gives an interesting performance. Although not a knock-out, when it gets going UNDER COVER delivers an unexpected punch.
