"Kouney Lemel" is Yiddish for a sort of hapless, talentless person who can be pushed around by others. Bourstein, the stuttering son of an illiterate, but wealthy man who is trying to marry off his daughter, is also to be married, to a woman whose family look down on him. However, they

ignore the fellow's shortcomings because of his father's wealth. Ganor is the girl he loves, but she loves another man, a family black sheep who pays little attention to strict Orthodox Jewish customs(also played by Bourstein). Several character switches later, there are two weddings and a very

happy village. This is an exuberant, occasionally confusing, but overall enjoyable film. Bourstein is a fine physical comedian who makes the story work. Thanks to his sensitive and humorous portrayals, the potential for maudlin drama is always averted. The director employed a light, breezy style

in this first Israeli musical, which inspired several other adventures of the Kouney Lemel character.
