Reportedly the highest grossing film in Denmark's history, TWIST & SHOUT is set in that country in 1963, when the music of the Beatles filled the streets and teenagers found themselves growing up a bit too fast. Bjorn (Adam Tonsberg) and Erik (Lars Simonsen) are the closest of friends,

standing by each other through good times and bad. Erik is the worse off--his mother is mentally ill, his father is perversely repressive--and, as a result, has been browbeaten into a pathetic excuse for a young man. The one girl Erik wants--the prissy, rich Kirsten (Ulrikke Juul Bondo)--is dead

set on getting Bjorn to marry her. Bjorn, however, is infatuated with Anna (Camilla Soeberg), a vision of beauty, maturity, and intelligence. TWIST & SHOUT is so well-intentioned and honest that it seems cynical to find fault with it. In the first half of his film, director Bille August paints a

charming but honest landscape of content, problem-free teenagers, a fantasy world in which nothing matters but getting a Beatles haircut, dancing to their songs, and forming a Beatles cover band. Life is easy and love is truly romantic. But when August begins to shout loud and clear his message

that all is not a Beatles song and that everything has its dark side, he does too far too obviously, and the latter half of TWIST & SHOUT is pure convention. The young actors are excellent and manage to save the film, especially Simonsen, whose character walks a thin line and who displays much

grace in his acting. August would later direct the international success PELLE THE CONQUEROR. The videotape has been excellently dubbed into English.
