This film takes a unique approach, allowing a fictional story to set up a documentary. The first part of the film is the story of a poverty-ridden country family in Brazil forced to leave a home in the northeastern section of the country and head for Sao Paulo in hopes of finding work.

The journey is hard, but eventually Barcelos and Santiago settle their family in a shantytown within Sao Paulo. Barcelos takes a low-paying construction job. The rest of the film gives an explanation of Brazil's feeble economic system (circa 1969) in relation to that of other countries, especially

the prosperous US.
