TOUS LES MATINS DU MONDE recounts the real-life story of master 17th-century French musician M. de Saint Colombe (Jean-Pierre Marielle) and his brilliant protege, Marin Marais. A grandly sentimental, eccentric romance, the film also tackles some hefty philosophical and aesthetic

questions. It's a heady, intoxicating mix. The film's framing narrative introduces us to the mature Marais (a periwigged Gerard Depardieu at his bloated, foppish best), surrounded by his adoring students in the royal musical chambers. Despite having found fame and fortune as musical director at

the court of Louis XIV, Marais is unfulfilled. Compared to his former mentor, the legendary Saint Colombe, Marais feels like an impostor. In flashback, he ruefully recalls his salad days as a student of Saint Colombe and lover of his mentor's elder daughter, Madeleine (Anne Brochet).

Though he's not on screen for very long, Gerard Depardieu gives a marvelously fussy performance as the older Marais. In an impressive film debut, his 21-year-old son Guillaume portrays the aspiring artist as a young man with real charm and conviction. Anne Brochet exudes a winning blend of naivete

and sophistication and Jean-Pierre Marielle's deadpan portrayal of Saint Colombe is wonderfully offbeat, filled with either long silences or aphorisms. ("Urinating is a chromatic descent; music exists to say things words cannot say.") The driving force of TOUS LES MATINS, though, is the

music--original compositions of Saint Colombe and Marais, with additional works by Lully, Couperin and Savall, conducted and performed by Jordi Savall and the Concert of Nations.
