An exciting if historically inaccurate western tale which once again brings the legendary town of Tombstone, Arizona, to the screen. Dix admirably portrays Earp, a brave gunslinger who settles in the town and is soon deputized as a U.S. marshall, assisting sheriff Halton in cleaning up

Tombstone. When local baddie Buchanan (as Curly Bill Brocius) accidentally kills a child in a gun battle on the street, Dix accepts the sheriff's badge. With the help of his brothers, Bell and Stephens, and dentist-gunslinger Taylor (as Doc Holliday), Dix confronts Buchanan and his gang. Dix

learns that the gang is working in cahoots with Halton, and he manages to pin a stagecoach robbery on them. The rivalry between Earp and the outlaws finally comes to a head when bullets fly outside the O.K. Corral, felling the bad men and leaving Tombstone a law-abiding town. While the film

manages to bend and twist the reality of what occurred at the O.K. Corral, it still proves to be a fast-paced entertainment. Dix comes across superbly as Earp (his first acclaimed role since 1931's CIMARRON), but, as deputy Doc Holliday, Taylor leaves much to be desired, coming nowhere near the

sickly, drunken, mean-tempered gunfighter that Doc really was.
