Jr.--the head of his usual studio, Universal--and filmed this one at Tiffany Studios, using his customary Universal production crew. The histrionics and self-applied makeup of Lewis, who plays the phantom, suffice to put him in the same league as Lon Chaney Sr., in this outstanding performance.

Burns, who plays the sheriff, later became a popular radio and movie comedian; when the film was reissued, Burns was showcased as a costar, his name occupying the position usually accorded that of Tarzan, Maynard's horse.
