A remake of the 1917 silent version of Samuel Clemens' classic, this succeeds on several levels, not the least of which was casting teenager Coogan in the lead. Coogan lives with his aunt, Blandick, and yearns to be out of school and getting into mischief. His best pal is Durkin and the

two boys dream of a life away from the small Missouri town. Green is the little girl who tags along (this role was larger in the film than in the book). All of the famous scenes are handled well, such as Coogan and Durkin listening to themselves being eulogized, the moment when Coogan uses his

brains to convince some other boys to whitewash the fence he has been assigned to, and the fright when they are menaced by Injun Joe. The following year, Paramount made HUCKLEBERRY FINN with the same cast and then a budget film called TOM SAWYER, DETECTIVE in 1938. Durkin was excellent and had a

promising career in front of him that was tragically cut short when he and Coogan's father were both killed in an automobile accident in 1935. The story of Tom and Huck was also made in 1937 as THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER, then musically in 1973, as well as a straight telling of the tale on TV in

1973. Blandick made a career out of playing aunts and will best be recalled as Auntie Em in THE WIZARD OF OZ.
