Except for the addition of sound, this thin remake of the 1922 First National silent of the same name departed little from the original. In fact, being an action picture, the addition of voices hampered more than helped the unwinding of the story. Cromwell, in his first "real" screen role

(he had worked as an extra on KING OF JAZZ), plays the youngest member of a hillbilly family that is feuding with an unruly bunch known as the Hatburns. Though warned to keep out of the proceedings, Cromwell shows his stuff when he has to retrieve a U.S. Mail bag that has been pilfered by the

Hatburns. Columbia mounted something of a publicity campaign touting Cromwell's screen debut, making the dubious claim that he was discovered hanging around the studio. Conjecture had it that his appearance at Columbia had more to do with a bit of media manipulation cooked up by the studio and a

journalist. Nevertheless, Cromwell turned in a credible performance.
