A Bible-toting drifter, Heffernan, happens upon the rape-murder of a black woman, Ayler, by farm boy Heller. The boy's father, Steward, attempts to pin the crime on the stranger, and he urges Heller to shoot both Heffernan and another witness, Ayler's mute son Collins. The intended

victims escape, pursued by the father and son and by sheriff White. Confronted in some woods, Heffernan kills Heller and later is wounded by Steward. Delirious, the injured Heffernan relives his past in flashback, revealing that he had been one of the airplane crew members who dropped the atomic

bomb on Hiroshima. The mute boy brings a doctor, who states his intention to turn Heffernan in. Heffernan and the boy embrace just as Steward shoots the drifter. This first feature picture by writer-director Kass suffers from its attempt to cover too much ground.
