because none of the other potential witnesses have lived long enough to tell their stories in court. Robinson books her into a nice hotel room, but she remains adamant, though she does grow attracted to her police bodyguard, Keith. Anderson, a policewoman who also watches after Rogers, is killed by one of Greene's hit men. When Robinson learns that Keith is in Greene's employ, he rushes to the hotel to save Rogers but ends up dead after an explosive gunfight. Rogers, shaken by the killings, realizes what she must do and bravely testifies against Greene, telling the judge she is a racket-buster by profession. This is one of Rogers' best roles, again showing audiences that her range went well beyond the famous musicals with Fred Astaire. She gives a well-rounded portrayal, showing both the tough and tender sides of her character. Karlson's direction is to the point, guiding the story succinctly without indulging in any extraneous directorial flourishes that would impede it. Keith and Greene both provide good support, and Robinson is excellent, though the esteemed actor thought little of the role.
