Cowpoke Williams rides the plains in this first of his westerns for Beacon Productions. When youngster Skelton is left an orphan and then kidnaped after her father is killed in a holdup, Williams and schoolteacher Shilling set out to find the culprits. The crook turns out to be none other

than local banker Peyton, who staged the robbery in order to obtain important papers pertaining to the railroad. This was the first western directed by Edgar Ulmer (THE BLACK CAT) who was known for darker, more disturbing material. Ulmer directed under a pseudonym from a story written by his wife

because he didn't want his regular studio, Universal, to discover that he was moonlighting. Ulmer only directed one other western, THE NAKED DAWN (1955), and it is vastly superior to this.
