Douglas Sirk directed this fine melodrama, starring Colbert as a nun at an English convent who becomes convinced that convicted murderess Blyth did not kill her brother. Working against the clock--Blyth is sentenced to hang--Colbert sets out to prove Blyth innocent. She eventually exposes

the killer--local doctor Douglas, who poisoned Blyth's brother in a fit of jealousy due to the younger man's attentions to his wife. Much of the action takes place during a violent flood that forces the townsfolk to seek refuge in the convent. Sirk successfully uses the raging outdoor elements to

comment on the equally stormy emotions of the characters. Minor, but nonetheless fascinating, work of Sirk. British actress Crawford, as the slatternly wife of killer Douglas, made her US screen debut here.
