A strongly praised work of surrealism from expatriate Chilean director Ruiz--living and working in France since 1973--about a story-telling sailor, Guillard, who catches a student murdering his tutor. He proceeds to regale the lad with tales of his bizarre adventures in South American

ports visiting the seedy opium dens and frequenting the brothels. It's not what happens in THREE CROWNS OF THE SAILOR but how it happens. Following the tradition of surrealism set in the 1920s, Ruiz directs this film with no basis in logic or reality--dreamy locations are filled with macabre

individuals speaking mystical nonsense. As difficult as it is to pin down, THREE CROWNS OF THE SAILOR is thoroughly enjoyable just as long as you don't try to understand it.
