In this adaptation of a novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Kawabata, Hira recalls via flashbacks his father's two lovers and the bitterness he now feels toward them. As a boy he meets Kyo, the first lover, whose affair with his father is brief. The father later becomes involved with

Wakao, a widow. After his father's death Hira is invited to a tea ceremony by Kyo. There he meets Nawikawa, whom Kyo wants him to marry. He is surprised to find Wakao there, knowing of the jealousy that existed between his father's two lovers. She is accompanied by her daughter, Azusa. Embarrassed

by Kyo's presumption, Hira is nevertheless attracted to Nawikawa. He speaks with Wakao after the tea ceremony and realizes she can't distinguish him from his father. They go to a nearby inn and make love. She is crushed when Hira says he doesn't want to marry Nawikawa and commits suicide. Kyo

destroys Hira's romances by constantly belittling him and his lovers. Asuza leaves, and Hira is left alone.
