Despite a huge budget, an international cast, and an intercontinental setting, this comedy about a 1,500-mile, five-country Monte Carlo auto rally quickly becomes tedious, with only intermittent spots of humor. This quasisequel to THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES (with a bit of THE GREAT RACE thrown in) has men competing in the international auto race held in the early 1920s. Curtis is a gambler who co-owns a British auto factory with Terry-Thomas, thanks to a handy poker game with Terry-Thomas' father. They have entered the race on the condition that whoever of

the pair wins gets to keep the factory. They constantly try to fool each other along the road, pulling every dirty trick imaginable to win. Curtis meets cutie Hampshire along the way, and there's much comic intrigue, most of it falling flat. Some stereotyped nonsense about feminists is thrown in,

with a few car accidents as well. Terry-Thomas loses the factory when a tire blows out and Hampshire ends up pushing Curtis' car across the finish line. The best moments are provided by Cook and Moore as a pair of kooky British racers. Originally part of the BBC's famous "Beyond the Fringe" show, the duo formed a hysterically funny partnership in the 1960s. As in their wonderful comic adventure, BEDAZZLED (1967), the two comics are great fun to watch. Otherwise THOSE DARING YOUNG MEN . . . is a tiresome, overblown piece that proves once more how effective comedy relies more on character than crazy

situations.
