MGM's musical factory couldn't always produce something terrific, as this film shows. The familiar boy-meets-girl story opens as opera singer Melchior brings his son, Johnston, to Mackinac Island. There Johnston meets Williams, the star of the "aquacaper." Durante provides some comic

moments as her piano-playing bodyguard and Whitty plays Williams' grandmother. Noted bandleader Cugat plays himself, providing several musical numbers with his orchestra. Though the production is colorful and glossy, and the choreography is by Stanley Donen, the film on the whole seems flat, with

none of the liveliness a musical needs to succeed. Durante gets to do his famous "Inka Dinka Do" (Jimmy Durante, Ben Ryan). Other songs include: "M'Appari" from "Martha" (Friedrich von Flotow, sung by Lauritz Melchior), "La Donna E Mobile" from "Rigoletto" (Giuseppe Verdi, sung by Melchior), "You

Are So Easy to Love" (Cole Porter, sung by Melchior), "The Man Who Found the Lost Chord," "A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That" (Durante, sung by Durante), "Chiquita Banana" (Leonard Mackenzie, Garth Montgomery, William Wirges), "No Wonder They Fall in Love," "Ten Percent Off" (Ralph

Freed, Sammy Fain), "Why Don't They Let Me Sing a Love Song," "Little Big Shot" (Benny Davis, Harry Akst), "I Love to Dance" (Freed, Burton Lane), and "When It's Lilac Time on Mackinac Island" (Leslie Kirk).
