Landi, a composer, spends much of her time with the womanizing Roland, a concert singer. His suspicions aroused, Walker--her father-in-law--hires unscrupulous detective Bellamy to find evidence of a presumed affair. Bellamy conceals a dictating machine microphone in the singer's room and,

two floors below, listens to the singer's conversations. When the sex-obsessed singer is murdered, Bellamy fabricates evidence pointing to Landi as the culprit. His motive? She is Bellamy's ex-wife; he seeks revenge. Landi's current husband, Hamilton, shields his wife from the charge by assuming

the blame for the crime. Although Hamilton's attorney believes that the unwritten law will get his client exonerated, Hamilton is convicted and imprisoned. Landi befriends ex-husband Bellamy, inviting him to her home. Using his own weapon against him and a concealed microphone, Landi uncovers the

real murderer. An interesting portent of things to come, this feature started a sub-genre that culminated in Francis Coppola's THE CONVERSATION (1974). A well-mounted production, with fine players and a talented director, but flawed by a lack of suspense; every turning is readily anticipated. A

change of pace for Bellamy, who had in previous roles been the personification of stability. In a small part, Loy once again played a half-caste with her standard ethnic accent. She was on loan from MGM, where she had progressed beyond such roles. Speculation is that her contract studio was

punishing her for some infraction.
