The Widow from Monte Carlo Reviews

Social climber Fazenda, at Monte Carlo on holiday, seeks to extort the friendship of glamorous widowed duchess Del Rio by purloining a compromising letter. Colin Clive is the impossibly snobbish English fiance whose marriage to Del Rio is threatened by the possible revelation of the contents of the missing missive. American thief Hymer is recruited to steal the letter back on behalf of his duchess "pal." All the while, suave suitor William never flags in his amorous pursuit of beautiful Del Rio. A contrapuntal course is followed as the scene shifts from the storied casino at Monte Carlo to the vulgar amusement park of Margate, where the dazzling but doughty duchess is tumbled in a barrel ride and Fazenda's skirts are blown to mid-thigh. The comical comedown of the high and mighty leads to the altar for William and the newly humanized Del Rio. Too unrelentingly contrived to be truly funny, this little romantic comedy is further marred by the wooden performance of the very decorative Del Rio.
