THE STORY OF ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL is the film for which Don Ameche will be best remembered, despite his Oscar-winning performance in COCOON more than 40 years later. The film opens in 1873 with Alexander Graham Bell (Ameche) trying to earn his living by working with deaf-mutes while

spending his off-hours inventing. Bell is soon enamored of a pretty young Scot (Loretta Young) whom he has been asked to teach. They fall in love, and she asks her father to unbuckle his copious money belt to back one of Bell's inventions. Bell hopes to perfect a process whereby he can use the

same kind of wires Western Union uses for sending dots and dashes to transmit the sound of a human voice. After much trial and error, he succeeds and, in doing so, becomes one of the most famous inventors in history. Not even remotely factual, this Hollywood-invented story is an enjoyable feature

nonetheless, especially when the boyish and earnest Ameche is onscreen.
