A young writer gets the chance to literally rewrite history in this smart and entertaining bit of speculative filmmaking from first-time writer-director Hilary Brougher. Tucker Harding (Terumi Matthews) is a successful science fiction writer of the 1950s who has just

begun working on a new book entitled The Sticky Fingers of Time when she's suddenly propelled 40 years along the space-time continuum. Reemerging in New York City in the late 1990s, with a nosebleed and a strange viscous goop under her eyes, Tucker meets Drew (Nicole Zaray), a depressed

writer who's subject to inexplicable black-outs and similarly gooey eyes. In her pocket: A vintage copy of The Sticky Fingers of Time, the plot of which bears an uncanny resemblance to the story in which she's about to take part. Drew and Tucker are both "time freaks" -- people capable of

navigating non-linear time in order to travel into the future as well as the past -- but they're not alone, and some of their fellow travelers have much more sinister things in mind than historical sight-seeing. If it all sounds like something out of Amazing Stories with a post-modern

twist, that's exactly the point. Tucker Harding is modeled on such celebrated science fiction writers as Andre Norton and James Tiptree Jr.: women who wrote under male pseudonyms in order to broaden their appeal in what was widely considered a man's genre. (The tough-talking Tucker's real first

name is the much more "feminine" Violet.) Brougher captures the spirit of these vintage sci-fi pretenders by serving up stylish, even sexy pulp that happens to be about women but is refreshingly unfettered by outmoded gender conventions. And like her pulp-fiction counterparts, she manages to

create a great deal of ambiance and a few thrills on a shoestring.
