Set against the picturesque background of Costa Brava, Spain, THE SPANISH GARDENER stars the anglo Bogarde as the gentle title character. He is employed by Hordern, a failed diplomat who is tortured by his own inadequacies. The diplomat's son, Whiteley, is an impressionable boy who is

smothered by his father's overbearing possessiveness. When Whiteley takes a liking to Bogarde, Hordern feels rejected and objects. Hordern engineers a scheme to get rid of Bogarde by having the family valet, Cusack, plant a stolen watch on him. Bogarde is arrested and carted off to prison on a

train. He manages to escape, however, and is left wounded in the hills. Whiteley, disgusted with his father's manipulating, runs away and hooks up with Bogarde. The gardener, genuinely concerned about the boy's relationship with his father, impresses upon him the importance of returning home and

forgiving his father. Hordern, having followed his son into the hills, overhears the conversation and reassesses his opinion of Bogarde. Whiteley and his father soon settle their differences and start anew with a stronger bond. This was Bogarde's second film with child star Whiteley; they

previously appeared together in THE STRANGER IN BETWEEN (1952). Whiteley's biggest claim to fame, however, is winning an honorary Oscar in 1954. Considering the fact that Whiteley was a child star he was given a miniature statuette for his performance in THE LITTLE KIDNAPPERS.
