Real-life New York radio and TV interviewer Olsen plays himself in this CITIZEN KANE-style film tracing the career of Broadway star Donat. She first arrives in New York after winning a faked beauty contest. This wakens her to life's realities, but she carries on. She takes up with

Violette, an actress, and Ramos, a painter. The latter gets her a job as a hatcheck girl. Soon Donat meets Frank, an older gossip columnist who changes her name from the ethnic "Elvira Kowalski" to "Mona Kent." She goes to a party at his home and there takes a swim dressed only in her lingerie.

This attracts some attention, and Donat starts getting parts in summer stock. After she takes a nude swim along a deserted beach, Brandsen, a young photographer, snaps some photos of her. He promises never to reveal the shots to anyone, and the two become friends. When Donat suffers a career

setback she returns to hatchecking while continuing to pose for Brandsen. When Frank proposes, Donat is absolutely flabbergasted. When she discovers that both her painter and photographer have sold nude portraits of her, she ends up dumping them and marrying the older man with the promise that

he'll make her a star.
