A young boy and girl fall in love but their marriage is opposed. The couple can't fight their urges, though, and the girl ends up pregnant. The boy is killed soon after, leaving the girl alone in the world. When an older man begins to show interest in her, the family encourages the

romance, and she reluctantly agrees to marry the man. She gives birth to a daughter and determines that this child shall have all the romance that she missed out on. Her fanatically religious husband won't allow this, though, so the girl is sent to China to become a missionary. There she meets a

young man and falls in love but is unsure about what to do. Meanwhile, her mother lies dying and somehow sends a telepathic message that influences her daughter to indulge in the romance. This is a well-handled drama with some fine performances that are never too mushy. Chatterton played both

mother and father in the film debut of the Dunning process, a new technique which allowed for a more realistic look when an actor played two characters required in the same shot. It looked good and made this soaper better than most of its ilk. The film earned one Academy Award nomination, for

Charles Lang's cinematography.
