This attempt to take a behind-the-scenes look at the love affairs of the rich and famous was the precursor of such television soap operas as "Dallas" and "Dynasty." No different from the 1980s versions, it is dressed up with fancy settings and expensive costumes, but it never really
lives up to our expectations. The one saving grace of THE RICH is the appearance of Chatterton in the lead. She added all the charm she could muster, impressing even the hard-to-please Bette Davis. Chatterton's marriage to Miljan heads for divorce when he admits his love for Dore. Chatterton takes
off for Paris with her admirer and confidant Brent, who is somewhat taken aback by the attention Chatterton pays to her no-good husband. Through contacts with powerful friends, she helps Miljan's ailing business, and when he is seriously injured in a car crash that kills Dore, she rushes to be at
his side. In the meantime, Brent has become frustrated at contending with Chatterton and has taken up with flapper Davis, who is madly in love with him. But everything is straightened out when Brent is assigned a job in China, and asks Chatterton to accompany him as his wife. Incidentally, Brent
and Chatterton fell in love in real life during the filming of this project, marrying soon after. Photography is top-notch, with effective direction, but it all has the effect of some pretty shallow personalities being exposed.
