Trenker's film career had begun in the early 1920s when he was working as a mountain guide in the Alps. German director Arnold Fanck cast him in a series of ski adventures, often pairing him with Leni Riefenstahl who would go on to become the Third Reich's noted documentary director. Trenker began

writing and directing in the 1930s and continued to work in the German film industry into the 1960s.
