Funny, sad and very wise. Attractive eye doctor Du Jiazhen (Rene Liu) would

like to make a few changes in her life, mainly concerning her status as a

single woman living alone in Taipei. Still reeling from a painful breakup with

her ex-boyfriend (whom she calls each night, leaving long, tearful messages on

his answering machine), she quits her hospital job and, during a "momentary

slip," uses an assumed name to put an ad in the Personals section of the

newspaper. Du gets over a hundred responses, none very promising. One brings a

suitcase full of his favorite women's shoes to their first meeting; another

doesn't really believe in marriage (he already has a wife), but won't say 'No'

to sex; a third tries to interest her in a career in prostitution. As Du's

quest for a husband becomes a full-time job, she's surprised to find how

willing these men are to completely reveal themselves to her. But the problem

lies with Du herself; determined as she is to find a mate, she's unable to

fully open up to them. Wry and dry as a bone, the film is really just a series

of encounters between Du and her suitors, many played by non-professionals. But each scene is beautifully written and exquisitely shot, and the sum total

is an unusually perceptive picture of urban loneliness. The humor is all in

the dialogue and perfectly timed cuts — aside from Du's hilarious exit

from her date with the shoe fetishist, there's very little physical humor. The

film's poignancy, meanwhile, lies in Liu's wonderful performance: Amused,

bemused and more than a little desperate, she's as touching as she is lovely.

(In Mandarin, with English subtitles.)
