A far-fetched melodrama, based on the popular play by Willard Mack and the novel by H.H. Van Loan, in which a petty criminal discovers that he's the illegitimate son of a well-placed political wife. Nickie Elkins (Richard Barthelmess) was raised from childhood by career criminal Buck

Gordon (Montagu Love), but as a young man he learns a shocking truth: His mother is Mrs. Bancroft (Alice Joyce), the wife of the Governor (Robert T. Haines). Buck urges Nickie to remember that if he ever kills another gangster, he can blackmail Mrs. Bancroft into helping him. Although Nickie,

who's in love with cabaret girl Dot (Lina Basquette), has already followed Buck into a life of law-breaking, he's not a hardened criminal and rejects the idea of blackmail. Buck declares that if Nickie wants to throw away the opportunity to shake down a rich woman, that's his business, but he

won't hesitate to do so himself. Nickie kills Buck and is, of course, arrested and sentenced to hang. Without revealing her personal stake in the matter, Mrs. Bancroft urges her husband to pay special attention to Nickie's case. On the eve of Nickie's execution, she goes so far as to use her

husband's personal phone to call the warden and have the execution stopped, after which the Governor comes through with a pardon. THE NOOSE was released in the wake of Barthelmess' successful PATENT LEATHER KID and cast him opposite starlet Lina Basquette, who was at the time far better known for

her scandalous private life than her screen appearances. Blond comedienne Thelma Todd (MONKEY BUSINESS, HORSE FEATHERS), appeared in the atypical role of Phyllis, a society woman whose plans to help Nickie better himself are derailed by Buck's murder. Reviewers made note of the fact that much of

THE NOOSE was said to have been shot in natural light, a very unusual practice for the time.
