Sophisticated Baxter once again plays the popular Crime Doctor, himself a onetime criminal, who suffers from amnesia after having received a knock on the head and who then devotes himself to solving crimes of a psychological nature. Here, Baxter attempts to get away for a brief vacation,

but is driven by his compassionate nature to take part in the investigation of a murder. This is one of the three pictures in the 10-film series in which dark and mature Baxter is taking a vacation when the story opens, recalling the fact that he was not in top shape when the series began. After

suffering a nervous breakdown in the early 1940s, he resumed performing in the "Crime Doctor" series, which gave him the chance to continue working at age 51 at a pace no more demanding than two films a year, each shot in only one month. A gradual fading out for the resonant voiced leading man who

once received as much fan mail as Clark Gable or Robert Taylor.
