"Murder is only killing without a license and everybody kills--the Army, the police." This sums up the philosophy of anti-hero Bronson, a hired assassin or "mechanic," known for his cold-blooded and efficient work. Vincent plays the young apprentice, eager to learn the business from its

best practitioner. During the course of the film, which is told episodically, the pair go on a series of Bondian-type adventures, leading up to a trick ending in which Bronson and Vincent manage to cheat some killers who are trying to get at them. Though extremely violent, the film is surprisingly

boring in spots. Bronson gives his usual Mt. Rushmore performance, while Vincent exhibits a gee-whiz adulation of his mentor. At times the relationship between the two borders on homosexuality, though Ireland (Bronson's real-life wife) is brought in for a few minor, time-consuming scenes as a call

girl. Many critics saw through the ploy and commented on the unusually close nature of Vincent's worship of the older man. The routine and terse story is by Carlino, who has more talent as a scriptwriter than THE MECHANIC indicates. Some nice location photography in downtown Los Angeles and

Naples, Italy, helps a bit. Directed by Winner (Bronson's choice) who had previously worked with the star in CHATO'S LAND and would team with him again in DEATH WISH.
