Shortly after the conclusion of the Napoleonic war Shtraukh must marry off his daughter, Shevetsova, so she can inherit the fortune of her aunt, Panova. There is one stipulation, however, in that the intended must have the initials A.F. It seems Panova was once engaged to a man with those

initials. The engagement broke off and she was left with linens, silverware, and other personal items all monogrammed with those letters. The film has a wonderful sense of slapstick and silliness that unfortunately is marred by a poor job of subtitling. Nevertheless, the wonderful comic

performances manage to overcome the language barrier. Costuming and set designs are lushly photographed, though some of the outdoor scenes are obviously studio sets. (In Russian; English subtitles.)
