This mediocre spy drama stars Caine as Sir Philip Kimberly (note the subtle similarity between his name and real-life British defector Kim Philby's), a one-time British spy who defected to the Soviet Union. When the Russians decide they no longer want him in Moscow, Kimberly undergoes

plastic surgery and, looking years younger, receives a new identity and is sent off to London to retrieve a list of Soviet agents operating in Britain. Kimberly surprises everyone by defecting back to the British side--but then escapes the Brits assigned to protect him and goes into hiding.

Olivier, the head of British intelligence and Caine's old rival, assigns Powell, an agent who lives with Caine's daughter, to find the born-again patriot. Caine and Olivier, who were so marvelous together in SLEUTH, again engage in a battle of wits but prove to be a much less successful

combination here.
