German director Roland Suso Richter's twisty thriller, based on Michael Cooney's play Point of Death, bears some resemblance to the big-budget BUTTERFLY EFFECT (2004) and Cooney's own IDENTITY (2003); it debuted in the US on cable. Simon Cable (Phillippe), survivor of a near-fatal accident, wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of the last two years. Determined to figure out how and why he got there, Cable he soon discovers that his brother (Robert Sean Leonard) has been killed and that he's married a woman named Anna (Piper Perabo), whom he doesn't recognize and who seems to know more than she's letting on about Cable's situation. He's also haunted by Claire (Sarah Polley), who claims she's his lover; like Anna, she's concealing as much as she reveals. As Cable tries to unravel the mystery of his brother's death, Simon switches back and forth between the present – 2002 – and two years earlier, as Cable "sees" different chapters of his life and pieces together their implications at the same time the viewer does. The difference is that Cable possesses the ability to alter his own future… or can he? Suso's mind-warping psychological suspense story is designed to keep the viewer guessing until the very end and its rapid-fire plot turns demand close watching, even after they veer into serious improbability. The time travel element is handled with an ambiguity that actually intensifies the impact of Cable's dilemma – can a change in his past can save his brother's future? -- and overall the film is genuinely gripping
