Tsuchiya is an ex-con who is blessed (or cursed) with the ability to transform himself into vapor, leaving nothing but a pile of clothes behind him. When the woman he loves is accused of robbery, Tsuchiya takes the rap, turning into vapor and re-enacting the crime for the coppers. He

proceeds to strangle the officers, who futilely fire bullets at the gaseous con. Hoping to get their man, the police enlist the help of the woman Tsuchiya loves. After the fashion of Dillinger's Lady in Red, she leads Tuschiya into a movie theater, which the cops fill with gas. Out come the

matches and poof goes Tsuchiya. Released in Japan in 1960, THE HUMAN VAPOR was directed by Inoshiro Honda (GODZILLA), who discovered that vapor is not nearly as visual as giant flame-throwing lizards.
