Intensely jealous of his former employer, playwright/director/impresario David Belasco, Cecil B. DeMille spent his entire career trying to outdo the extravagant Belasco in every way. We have no doubt that DeMille's 1915 screen version of Belasco's Girl of the Golden West was twice to three times as spectacular as it was on stage (even in the Puccini opera version). The Girl is Blanche Sweet, who is in love with dashing outlaw Ramerrez (House Peters). Escaping from the relentless Sheriff Rance (Theodore Roberts), Ramerrez hides out in the Girl's combination general store/saloon. In a tense moment, the Girl agrees to play a winner-take-all card game. If he wins, he'll agree to let Ramerrez escape--provided that the Girl become his lover. Girl of the Golden West was remade in 1923, 1930 and 1937, the last time as a musical with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald.
