Wonderful fantasy-romance, in which beautiful widow Lucy (Gene Tierney) buys a remote coastal home that was once occupied by a dashing merchant captain. Shortly after Lucy moves in with her little daughter, Anna (Natalie Wood), she encounters some strange doings, but is not alarmed even

though her neighbors have already warned the headstrong woman that the cottage is haunted. Lucy is more curious than apprehensive and she demands that the ghost (Rex Harrison) reveal himself. He does, in all his handsome, bearded glory, and not only befriends Lucy and her daughter, but falls in

love with the lovely lady.

This fragile story would immediately collapse into implausibility were it not for the wonderful chemistry between Harrison and Tierney. In this, his second American film, Harrison is superb as the sharp-tongued, affectionate ghost and Tierney shines as his earthbound object of love. Bernard

Herrmann's score is both whimsical and full of otherworldly lyricism. Remade in 1955 as STRANGER IN THE NIGHT.
