A cryptic and intense black comedy-thriller from Dutch director Verhoeven who, in 1987, delivered the blockbuster ROBOCOP, THE FOURTH MAN stars Krabbe as a hard-drinking, fatalistic, bisexual writer who must supplement his paltry income by working the lecture circuit. During one speaking

engagement he meets sensual, alluring Soutendijk, whose three husbands have all died mysterious deaths. Krabbe's imagination begins to run wild--he has a nightmare about being castrated, has visions of the Virgin Mary, and "sees" Soutendijk's dead lovers--as he becomes convinced that the blonde

woman, like a spider, uses her men and then devours them. Soon Krabbe becomes attracted to a lover of Soutendijk (Hoffman), and the men wonder which of them will become the next victim. THE FOURTH MAN delivers a heavy dose of religious and sexual symbolism, a bit of gore, and some sharp-edged

perversity. Definitely not a film for everyone, but those who like their films on the fringe will like the ideas in this one. (In Dutch; with English subtitles.)
